Ramadan Prayer: Nigeria

Nigeria is on track to become the fourth most populous country in the world by 2050. It is currently the most populated nation in Africa, with 50 percent of people living in urban areas. High birth rates combined with growing poverty has put a strain on families and cities. Unemployment and a high percentage of youth in the country have helped fuel ethnic and religious violence. According to the CIA World Factbook, “Nigeria also is a major source, transit, and destination country for forced labor and sex trafficking.”

According to the Joshua Project, 26 percent of Nigerians are Evangelical Christians but 89 unreached people groups still remain — primarily in the northern region, leaving 61.3 million Nigerians who have very little Gospel witness among them. The cities of Africa are a hotbed for religious dissension and violence, but they are also a strategic location to carry the light of the Gospel into darkness.

Prayer points

“So Peter opened his mouth and said: ‘Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears Him and does what is right is acceptable to Him.'” (Acts 10:34-35)

Muslims – West Africa, like the rest of the continent, is a melting pot of worldviews and religions. Islam is mixed with tribal religions, Christian traditions, Catholicism, mysticism, and everything in between. The flavor of Islam might be different than in the Middle East, but the hold it claims on Muslims is no less strong. Pray that Muslims will evaluate their spiritual state based on the Bible alone and see the lack of hope and righteousness provided through Islam. Pray the Lord will convict them of sin and enable them to see their separation from Him so they can be reconciled by the blood of Jesus.

Christians – Pray for Nigerian Christians to continue growing in their maturity. Pray their faith will grow strong through the study of God’s Word, fellowship within local churches, and prayerful following of Christ. Ask the Lord to use them to boldly proclaim His glory among their family, friends, and neighbors and send them into the Muslim areas of northern Nigeria.
