Ramadan Prayer: Egypt
Egypt is the most populous nation in the Arab world and is located directly across the Red Sea from Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The nation has also become a major refugee location because of its immigration agreements with the western world. Cairo, specifically, has one of the largest urban refugee populations in the world. The direction of Egypt has a tremendous impact on the rest of the Muslim world. Its long history (dating nearly 3,000 years) has established it as a cultural, political, and religious center.
Only 4 percent of Egyptians are evangelical Christian, and 25 unreached people groups are located here. For more than 1,000 years, Egypt was a majority Christian nation, and there is still a strong tradition of Coptic Christianity. They now face continual persecution from the 87 percent Muslim population through the presence of the Islamic State and other terrorist groups. Sunni Islam has a strong intellectual hold on the region and the Islami State has a strong cultural influence as well.
Population: 99,413,317 (July 2018 est.)
Language: Arabic (official), Arabic, English, and French widely understood by educated classes
Main religions: Muslim (predominantly Sunni) 90%, Christian (majority Coptic Orthodox, other Christians include Armenian Apostolic, Catholic, Maronite, Orthodox, and Anglican) 10% (2015 est.)
Muslims – Pray for the people of Egypt to find their rest in Jesus. In the midst of political upheaval and social unrest, Muslims need to see the hope and love of Christ. Pray for the Lord to provide them access to Egyptian Christians, missionaries and God’s Word.
Christians – Pray for the faith and boldness of Christians in Egypt. Pray for their safety from physical persecution. Pray they will live lives that openly proclaim Jesus through words and actions that bring glory to God. Pray Egyptian immigrants will meet Christian friends as they move to other parts of the world.
