Ramadan Prayer: Bangladesh

Summary of Bangladesh

Bangladesh is located in Southeast Asia and almost completely surrounded by India. Myanmar (also known as Burma) borders the country on the eastern side. The nation is based around the delta region where the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers join and empty into the Bay of Bengal. Nearly half of its labor force is involved in the agriculture industry, while the majority of others work in service and textiles industries. Political rivalries and dissensions have dictated much of the past century.

There are 323 people groups located in Bangladesh, and 291 of those groups are unreached with the message of Jesus. Islam began reaching the area in the 10th century through traders and settlement, and it has guided their worldview since. Only 0.3% of people call themselves Christians, but there is steady growth of the Gospel. Persecution is not as present among Christians in Bangladesh as in other predominantly Muslim countries, but Islam has deep roots among families and traditions.

Prayer points

“For the Scripture says, ‘Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.’ For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!'” (Romans 10:11–15)

Muslims – Pray for the 163 million unreached people in Bangladesh. Most of them are trapped within the lies of Islam, which has affected their worldview system for generations. As the people of Bangladesh face troubles from various directions (political, economic, relational, etc.), ask that the Lord would show them the emptiness of Islam and give them a desire to learn more about Jesus.

Christians – Christians are few and far between in Bangladesh. Pray believers would be able to find fellowship with other brothers and sisters through the creation of small house churches. Ask the Lord to continue filling their hearts with hope and gladness in their salvation, and help them see His vision for reaching their communities with the Gospel.
