OLDS Recap – Wilderness First Responder Edition
The Wilderness First Responder certification is internationally recognized industry standard for any outdoor professional, and the first section of OLD School! All fifteen students learned skills ranging from assessing scene safety to treating injuries in the backcountry, and even a healthy dose of improvising solutions with what the students carry on their backs. The course contained a huge classroom element, learning potential illnesses and injuries and their backcountry solutions, but the knowledge was really fleshed out in daily scenarios, when the students could practice assessing and treating patients. The course culminated in two huge, multi-patient scenarios, one in the afternoon and one at night, where they practiced both patient care and working together as a rescue unit. All seventeen students also passed a written exam and a basic, one-patient scenario, which means that this Fall, they’ll travel in a well-trained group!
