1. Biblical Discipleship
Here at OLDSchool our number one priority is the spiritual growth of our students. We are passionate about the authority of scripture and believe that there is power in teaching from God’s word. Our prayer is that every student that comes through an OLDSchool semester would be more conformed to the image of Jesus Christ.
“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” –2 Corinthians 3:18
During a semester of OLDSchool, not only are you learning to live in the woods, you are also learning to live in close community with those around you. Sometimes this may not be an easy task but through the “storming” and “norming” of group dynamics you will see yourself grow individually as well as the community around you. We believe this is a huge part of learning how to function as the body of Christ. During a semester of OLDSchool you are challenged to work as a group in a low risk environment that can be applied later on in your life and on a larger scale. For example, selfishness in your cook group around dinnertime may be a struggle but it’s low risk to face it now and learn through cooking with a group than to be faced with your selfishness for the first time later on in your marriage or family. Spencer Davis, the Executive Director of OLDSchool, calls these situations “microcosms” of the real world. OLDSchool is a unique environment where personal growth and growing in community fit hand in hand.
3. Once in a Lifetime Outdoor Experiences
The OLDSchool semester is jam packed with tons of fun outdoor experiences such as rock climbing, a two week backpacking expedition, sea kayaking, caving, whitewater rafting, ice climbing (in the spring) and more. A lot of other wilderness semesters tend to focus on just one of these activities but here at OLDSchool we like for our students to get a taste of a lot of different outdoor experiences. It’s an exciting and packed three months and most students would agree that it is a life changing experience.
4. Industry Standard Certifications & College Credit
The following is a list of the certifications/trainings you can obtain as an OLDSchool Alumni:
These certifications are great for your personal development as well as your resume. The outdoor industry is looking for experience and certifications. It’s just the nature of the jobs in the outdoor field. Safety and mastery of a skill is very important when it comes to working in outdoor recreation so with these certifications you are more likely to find a job in this field.
Students have the opportunity to receive 15 credit hours towards an Outdoor Leadership minor from Southeastern University in Florida (SEU.) Here at OLDSchool we love SEU! SEU has been a great partner for our wilderness semester program. They are easy to work with and love helping students get the experience they find at OLDSchool while completing an Outdoor Leadership minor. Really, it’s a WIN-WIN for everyone.
5. Discipleship, oh wait did we say that already?! While being in the outdoors and having a good time is a passion for all of us here at OLDSchool, the love and devotion we have for Christ is first and foremost because he loved us first and we are created for the glory of God.
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31
Again, our goal and prayer is for every student to become more conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. We strive to disciple you in a way that helps you to grow as a follower of Jesus Christ and in turn our hope is that you will take what you learn during your semester and go out into the world and disciple others, sharing your experience and the good news of the gospel with all those you encounter.
Therefore, discipleship will always be our first priority. A close second is taking full advantage of his beautiful creation around us…so come and experience it all with us this semester at OLDSchool!
